Hood Museum of Art

Dartmouth College

Recipient of the AIA Honor Award

The design uses a ceremonial gateway with the name “Hood” etched above to seemingly move the museum entrance forward to the Green. Behind the gateway, an outdoor courtyard serves as a sculpture gallery for the Museum and point of entrance. To capture a wider audience, the Hood entrance is strategically linked to the center of student activity on campus, the Hopkins Center student mailboxes and main snack bar.

It is really quite brilliantly sited; one of the few cases anywhere of a large building shoe-horned into an awkward space between two other large buildings, and fitting altogether naturally . . .  A large gateway spans the space between the two older buildings and invites the visitor into a courtyard through which the museum is entered. Inside are some galleries that are strong and spirited spaces; they are all hospitable to the varied collection offered by the Hood, a general art museum that houses many period styles
