This project site is located on the outskirts of historic Ferndale, California in the far northern reaches of Humbolt County. The images here document several days spent on location with our client, a dairy ranching family, to conceptualize the design potential for a new homestead in this beautiful and challenging location.

While the preferred design aesthetic was drawn from the barn vernacular, the design solution was strongly dictated by the extreme and persistent wind conditions that characterize this unique environment. The effort was collaborative. As architects, we see our role as facilitators, actively engaging our clients in a dynamic process of design. Our toolkit includes massing models, sketch vignettes, diagrammatic floor plans and, most importantly, active listening. Feedback was essential to understand the demanding and critical features of the site and dairy ranching lifestyle.
